Political Journey

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu began his political journey in 1989 by joining the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). He entered state politics in 2003, when he was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Indian National Congress (INC)

In December 2022, he won his fourth term from the Nadaun constituency and was sworn as the 7th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.

Notable Achievements

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the current Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, has led several important reforms in social welfare, education and environment policies. His major achievements are –

1. Reinstatement of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS)

One of the biggest decisions was restoring the Old Pension Scheme during his very first Cabinet Meeting. This fulfilled a major poll promise and benefited nearly 1.36 lakhs government employees who were previously under the National Pension System (NPS).

2. “Children of the State” Initiative

Through the Mukhyamantri Sukh-Aashray Yojana (MMSAY) orphaned children, specially-abled individuals, and destitute women have been given the special status of “Children of the State”.

They receive financial support, housing grants, assistance for higher education and training for employment, assuming long term welfare and protection.

3. Education Reforms

To improve school infrastructure and learning quality, he introduced Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools. These schools will be equipped with digital class rooms, modern facilities, and strong extracurricular progress to provide holistic education.
