Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is a prominent Indian politician from Himachal Pradesh. He has been serving as the 7th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh since 11 December 2022.
His political career began with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). He served as the NSUI President from 1989 to 1995 after which he became the State Youth Congress Secretary and later its President.
Sukhu entered the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the first time in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007 and 2017 as a member of the Indian National Congress (INC).
In December 2022, he was again elected to the Fourteenth Vidhan Sabha for his fourth term from the Nadaun Constituency and on 11 December 2022, he took oath as the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was born on 27 March 1964 in Bhavran village, located in the Nadaun tehsil of Hamirpur district, Himachal Pradesh. His father, Rasil Singh, worked as a driver with the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), while his mother, Sansar Devi is a homemaker.
Sukhu completed his Graduation from Government Degree college, Sanjauli, Shimla in 1985. He then pursued a Master’s Degree at Himachal Pradesh University, finishing in 1988. Later, he earned his LLB Degree from the same University in 1992.
In 1998, Sukhvinder Singh married Kamlesh Thakur, who is also a politician and currently the MLA of the Dehra constituency in Himachal Pradesh. The couple has two daughters – Kamna Thakur and Rahun Thakur.
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is popularly known as the “Alto Man”. He owned a Maruti Suzuki Alto for many years and often drove it himself, even as his political career grew. Because of this, People and political circles in Shimla fondly gave him the nickname. On 14 March, 2023, he even arrived at the Himachal Pradesh State Assembly in his Alto to attend the budget session.
In 2023, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu donated his lifetime savings of Rs. 51 lakhs to the Disaster Relief Fund to support recovery and relief efforts for people affected by the 2023 North India floods. His contribution effected his deep commitment to public welfare and humanitarian service.
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu served as the President of the Himachal Pradesh Youth Congress for a full decade from 1998 to 2008, making his the longest-serving leader in the organisation’s history.
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is reportedly the only Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh to date who sports a Moustache, making him stand out uniquely in the State’s Political History.
