Political Journey
Akhil Gogoi, a farmer’s leader and strong anti-CAA activist, started his political journey from jail. In 2020, he founded a new political party called Raijor Dal (People’s Party) while he was in jail.
In the 2021 Assam Assembly Election, Akhil Gogoi contested from the Sibsagar constituency. He won the election as an independent candidate, defeating BJP candidate Surabhi Rajkonwari by a huge margin of 57,219 votes. he won the election without doing any public campaign. Akhil became the first in Assam to win an election from jail.
In 2019, Akhil Gogoi was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) during the statewide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He spent about 18 months in jail on charges related to the violent protests and alleged links with Maoists. According to his 2021 election affidavit, 52 criminal cases were pending against him at that time.
