Sanjay Dutt is well-known Indian actor and film producer. He has played many different types of roles in popular movies like Rockey, Khalnayak, Vaastav, and Munna Bhai MBBS. He mainly works in Hindi films, but he has also acted in a few Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, and Punjabi movies.
He started his acting career with the film Rocky in 1981, which was directed buy his father, Sunil Dutt. After that, he faced a tough time in his career, but movies like Vidhaata, Naam, and Thanedaar kept him in the limelight between 1982 to 1990. Later, he became a big superstar with hit films such as Sajaan, Khalnayak, Daag: The Fire, Haseena Maan jaayegi, Vaastav, Munna Bhai MBBS, and Lage Raho Munna Bhai. These films made him very popular across the country.
In April 1993, Sanjay Dutt was arrested under TADA and the Arms Act for keeping illegal weapons linked to the 1993 Bombay bomb blasts case. He was convicted in 2007 by the TADA court and later in 2013 by the Supreme Court for possessing illegal arms, including an AK-56 rifle.
He was given a five-year jail sentence and was kept in Yerwada Jail in Pune. Dutt completed almost four years of his sentence and got early release for good behaviour. He was finally released on 25 February 2016.
Sanjay Dutt was born on 29 July 1959 in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra. His father, Sunil Dutt, was a famous actor and later a politician. His mother, Nargis Dutt, was also a well-known Indian actress. His name “Sanjay” was chosen through public suggestions sent to an Urdu film magazine called Shama.
Sanjay Dutt was born to a Hindu father and a Muslim mother. His father’s family originally came from the Rawalpindi region in present-day Pakistan, from a village called Khurd in Jhelum district. Through his father, he belongs to the Hussaini Brahmin community, a group that respects Imam Hussain and is known to have a mixed Hindu-Muslim identity. This community faced many problems during the 1947 Partition riots due to its unique background.
Sanjay Dutt has two sisters, Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt. His mother passed away in 1981, just before the release of his first film. Her death is often said to be the reason behind his early drug problems. His father, Sunil Dutt, died of a heart attack in his sleep on 25 May 2005.
Sanjay Dutt studied at Lawrence School, Sanawar in Himachal Pradesh, where he completed his schooling up to class 12. After that, he joined Elphinstone College in Mumbai, but he left college midway to start his acting career. His acting journey began with Rocky, a film made by his father.
