Akhil Gogoi is an Indian Politician and RTI activist from Assam. He has been serving as the MLA of Assam Legislative Assembly from Sibsagar constituency since 2021. He is also the founder of Raijor Dal (People’s Party).
In Assam’s political and activist scene, Akhil Gogoi is known as a strong and fearless voice. He is widely respected for his work for farmers, indigenous communities, and clean and transparent governance. Over the years, he has built a distinct identity through continuous public movements and people-centric campaigns.
Akhil Gogoi started his activist journey with the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), a farmer’s organisation what works for land rights, environmental protection, and against corruption. Through KMSS, he connected closely with grassroots issues affecting rural and indigenous people of Assam.
One of his major early campaigns was against illegal land acquisition and corporate enforcement. He also led several anti-corruption movements across the state. His work gained national recognition when he received the Shanmugam Manjunath Integrity Award in 2008 for his fight against corruption.
In 2010, Akhil Gogoi was awarded the National Right to Information Award by the Public Cause Research Foundation. This was for exposing a ₹1.25 crore scam under the Sampoorna Gram Rozgar Yojana in Golaghat district of Assam.
Akhil Gogoi was born on 1 March 1976 in Lukhurakhan village, Chelenghat area of Jorhat district, Assam. His father was Boluram Gogoi. His mother, Priyada Gogoi, actively campaigned for him during the 2021 Assam Assembly Election when Akhil Gogoi was in jail.
He completed his early schooling at Hemlai High School and passed his matriculation in 1991. He then studied at J. B. College, Jorhat, and completed his higher secondary education in 1993. Akhil Gogoi earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English Literature from Cotton College (now Cotton University), Guwahati in 1996. Later, he took admission for post-graduation at Gauhati University, but he could not complete his degree.
Akhil Gogoi is married to Geetashree Tamuly. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Assamese at B. Borooah College, Guwahati.
Geetashree Tamuly is also a writer. She earned her PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati in 2021. Her research topic was “Lakshminath Bezbaroa and His Times: Language, Literature and Modernity in Colonial Assam”, under the supervision of Professor Arupjyoti Saikia. The couple has a son named Nachiketa Gogoi.
