Himanta Biswa Sarma is an Indian politician and the 15th Chief Minister of Assam. He was first elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2001 from Jalukbari constituency. He was previously a member of the Indian National Congress (INC), and later joined the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) on 23 August 2015.
He also serves as the Convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), contributing to political coordination across the northeastern region.
Himanta Biswa Sarma was born on 1 February 1969 in Jorhat, Assam. His father, the late Kailash Nath Sarma was a writer, poet, and lyricist who passed away in 2010. His mother, Mrinalini Devi is a literary activist.
Sarma finished his schooling at Kamrup Academy in Guwahati in 1985. He graduated from Cotton College (now Cotton University) in 1990 and completed his master degree there in 1994. He also earned a law degree from BRM Government College and later completed his Ph. D. from Gauhati University in 2006.
Dr. Sarma married Riniki Bhuyan Sharma in 2001. She is a businesswoman and owns one of the largest media house in Assam. They have two children – a daughter, Sukanya Sarma and a son, Nandil Biswa Sarma.
In 1983, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma was a child actor in an Assamese movie called “Kokadeuta, Nati Aru Hati” which means “Grandfather, Grandson and Elephant”.
Himanta Biswa Sarma was also a strong leader in student life. When he was at Cotton College (now Cotton University), he created record elected as the General Secretary of the student union three times continuously in 1988, 1989 and 1991.
Before entering the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2001, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma was a practicing lawyer. He completed his LL.B. degree from BRM Government Law College, Guwahati and practiced at the Gauhati High Court from 1996 to 2001.
While studying at Cotton College (now Cotton University), young Himanta Biswa Sarma once told his classmate, Riniki Bhuyan, “Tell your mother, I will be the Chief Minister one day”. Years later, he eventually became Chief Minister, Riniki Bhuyan now his wife, had been by his side all always.
