Bhupendra Patel whose full name is Bhupendra Rajnikant Patel is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Gujarat. His political career began in the Memnagar Municipality, and he later became the MLA from the Ghatlodia constituency in Ahmedabad during the 2017 Gujarat Assembly Elections.
In September 2021, after former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani resigned, Mr. Patel was unanimously chosen as the new Chief Minister by BJP Legislative Party leaders. He took oath on 13 September 2021 and is now serving as the 17th Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Bhupendra Patel was born on 15 July 1962 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to Gujarati parents. His father, Rajnikantbhai Patel, worked as a principal at Patan Polytechnic College.
He completed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) from J. B. Shah Jyoti Higher Secondary School in Ahmedabad in 1979. After finishing school, he studied for a Civil Engineering diploma at Government Polytechnic College in Patan, Ahmedabad, and completed it in 1982.
Bhupendra Patel began his career in the construction field and built a successful business before joining politics. He is also a trustee of the Vishv Umiya Foundation, which is building the world’s tallest temple of “Jagat Janani Maa Uniya” at Vishv Umiyadham, and a trustee of Sardardham.
His entry into the state politics came in 2017, when he won the Ghatlodiya seat in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections with a record margin. On 13 September 2021, after Vijay Rupani resigned, he was elected as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party and sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
In the 2022 Gujarat Vidhan Sabha Election, under his leadership, the BJP won a historic victory with 156 out of 182 seats. He took oath for his second term on 12 December, 2022.
Bhupendra Patel married Hetalben Patel in 1984. She is a businesswoman, who is a partner in the Ansh Company and involved in the family's construction business. They have two children – a son, Anuj Patel, who works in the construction business, and a daughter, Dr. Suhani Patel, who is a dentist. The family lives in Ahmedabad.
Bhupendra Patel spent his childhood in Kadvapol in Ahmedabad’s Walled city, where people still lovingly call “Kadvapol na Ladkwaya”, meaning the beloved person of Kadvapol.
Beyond politics, Bhupendra Patel enjoys playing badminton and Cricket. He follows the “Akram Vignan Movement” founded by Dada Bhagwan. He also serves as a trustee at Sardar Bham and the “Vishv Umiya Foundation”.
On 11 September 2021, after Vijay Rupani resigned, Bhupendra Patel was unanimously chosen as the BJP Legislative party leader and Chief Minister on 12 September 2021 in Gandhinagar. He took oath as the Chief Minister at Gandhinagar on 13 September 2021.
