Narendra Modi is an Indian politician and a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 2014, he led the BJP to a big victory in the Lok Sabha elections and took oath as the Prime Minister of India.
Before becoming country’s prime minister, he served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014. Narendra Modi is the leader of the House and a member of Lok Sabha from Varanasi. In the 2019 general elections, the BJP again won a clear majority, and Modi was sworn in as prime minister for a second term.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP did not get a majority on its own. However, the BJP-led NDA alliance won 293 out of 543 seats. This made it possible for Narendra Modi to take oath as the Prime Minister of India for the third time in a row.
Narendra Modi was born as Narendra Damodardas Modi on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar, a small town in Gujarat. He grew up in a simple family. His father, Damodardas Mulchand Modi, ran a small tea stall at the Vadnagar railway station, while his mother, Heeraben Modi, was a homemaker.
Narendra Modi completed his primary and higher secondary education in Vadnagar. After finishing school in 1967, he went on to study political science. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from the University of Delhi in 1978. Later, in 1983, he completed his Master of Arts (MA) in political science from Gujarat University in Ahmedabad.
Modi became an active member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in the early 1970s. He joined the Bharatiya the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1987. In 1988, he was appointed as the General Secretary of the BJP’s Gujarat unit.
Narendra Modi is the third among six siblings in his family. His elder brothers are Somabhai and Amritbhai. His younger siblings are Prahladbhai, Vasantiben and Pankaj Modi.
Narendra Modi married to Jashodaben in 1968. Soon after the marriage, they mutually decided to live separately. Jashodaben is a retired school teacher. She lives a simple life in Gujarat and spends much of her time in prayer.
