Conrad Sangma is an Indian Politician and the leader of the National People’s Party (NPP). He is the 12th Chief Minister of Meghalaya and has been in office since 2018. Earlier, he also served as a member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha (Lower House).
Conrad Sangma first entered state politics in 2008 when he was elected as an MLA from the Selsella constituency. Before that, he contested the Garo Hills Autonomous Dirstrict Council election in 2004, where he lost by a narrow margin of 182 votes.
During his time as an MLA, Conrad Sangma handled several key departments in the Meghalaya government, including Finance, Power, Tourism, General Administration (GAD), and Information Technology (IT). In 2016, he was elected as the President of the National People’s Party.
In the 2018 Meghalaya Assembly Election, the NPP formed the government with the support of other regional parties. Conrad Sangma took oath as the 12th Chief Minister of Meghalaya on 6 March 2018, marking the beginning of his first term as Chief Minister.
Conrad Sangma, whose full name of Conrad Kongkal Sangma, was born on 27 January 1978 in Tura, Meghalaya. His father, Purno Agitok Sangma (P. A. Sangma), was a well-known Indian leader. He served as the former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and also as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. P. A. Sangma passed away in 2016 due to a heart attack. Conrad Sangma’s mother, Soradini K. Sangma, is a homemaker.
Conrad Sangma completed his schooling at St. Columba’s School, Delhi. He later studied business management and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He also completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance from Imperial College London.
Conrad Sangma is married to Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma. The couple got married on 29 May 2009. His wife is an MBBS doctor and also a politician. She is currently serving as an MLA from the Gambegre constituency in Meghalaya.
Conrad Sangma and his wife have three children. They have one son and two daughters named Amara and Katelyn. The family lives in Shillong, Meghalaya.
Conrad Sangma is the second son of P. A. Sangma and Soradini K. Sangma. His elder brother, James Sangma, is a politician and is the current working president of the National People’s Party (NPP).
He has two younger sisters. One of them, Agatha K. Sangma, is a politician and a former Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. His other sister, Christy Sangma, is not involved in politics.
