Gaurav Gogoi's Political Career in INC as MP, Opposition Leader & APCC Chief

Gaurav Gogoi began his political career in 2014 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Kaliabor constituency of Assam.he contested on the Indian national Congress (INC) ticket and won the election by a margin of over 93,000 votes, defeating BJP candidate Mrinal Kumar Saikia.

During his first term (2014-2019), he served on several important parliamentary bodies. These included the Standing Committee on Railways, the Standing Committee on Defence, the Committee on Violation of Protocol Norms, and the Consultive Committee of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

In 2019, Gaurav Gogoi was re-elected to the 17^th Lok Sabha from the Kaliabor constituency for his second term. During this period, he was a Member of the Standing Committee on Finance, the Committee on Government Assurances, and the Consultive Committee of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

In the 2024 general elections, Gaurav Gogoi won his third consecutive term as a Member Of Parliament from the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, representing the 18^th Lok Sabha. In his third term, he has served as a Member of the Business Advisory Committee, the Joint Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Committee on Finance.

Gaurav Gogoi is a prominent leader of the Indian national Congress and key voice from Northeast India in national politics. Since 2024, he has been serving as the Deputy leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

His major achievements and roles include –

1. 2025: Appointed as President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) by the Congress high command
2. 2024: Appointed Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha
3. 2024: Elected as Member of Parliament from Jorhat for his third term
4. 2014-2019: Elected twice as MP from Kaliabor constituency
5. 2015: Named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum

As the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Gaurav Gogoi has focused on party reorganisation, grassroot outreach, and raising issues related to environmental and social justice in Assam.

Some of his major initiatives are –

1. Preparation for 2026 Assam Assembly Election: After taking charge as APCC President in 2025, Gogoi began strengthening booth-level organisation and increasing public engagement to challenge the BJP in Assam.
2. Raijor Podulit Raijor Congress (meaning People’s Congress at people’s Doorstep): Launched in December 2025, this mass outreach programme collects public suggestions through Aspiration Boxes placed in busy public areas to help shape the party’s election manifesto.
3. Monthly membership Drive: Started in September 2025, this initiative observes the 10^th of every month as a membership day. In November 2025, the party reported over 8000 new members in a single day.
4. Land Rights Advocacy: Gaurav Gogoi has raised strong concerns about land displacement in Assam and promised to work for land rights and fair redistribution, accusing the state government of favouring ruling party interests.
