Gaurav Gogoi is an Indian Politician and a leader of the Indian National Congress (INC). He is a Member Of Parliament(MP) in the Lok Sabha and currently serves as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014 from the Kaliabor constituency of Assam during the 16th Lok Sabha elections. He was re-elected from Kaliabor in 2019 for the 17th Lok Sabha. In the 2024 general elections, he won his third term as MP from the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, representing the 18th Lok Sabha.
The Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency was later abolished due to delimitation and is now known as the Kaziranga Lok Sabha constituency.
Gaurav Gogoi has been an active member of the Indian National Congress since 2014. Apart from being an MP since 2014, he also holds key responsibilities in the party. In 2024, he was appointed as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. In 2025, he was elected as the Presidentof the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) to lead the party in the state.
Before entering politics, Gaurav Gogoi worked as a full-time Social Worker. He was involved with several non-profit organisations, including Farm2Food Foundation, where he is a co-founder, the Youth Forum on Foreign Policy, and Pravah, a Delhi-based NGO.
Gaurav Gogoi officially joined the Indian National Congress in 2014. In the same year, the party nominated his as its candidate from the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency. He won the 2014 election by defeating BJP candidate Mrinal Kumar Saikia with a margin of over 93,000 votes.
He successfully retained his seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and later contested from Jorhat constituency in the 2024 general elections, winning his third consecutive term as a Member of Parliament.
In 2024, Gaurav Gogoi was appointed as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. In 2025, the Congress high command selected him as the President of the Assam Congress Committee, entrusting him with leading the party in Assam ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Gaurav Gogoi was born on 4 September 1982 in Delhi. His father, Tarun Gogoi, was a Lawyer and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress (INC). He also served as the Chief Minister of Assam for three terms. His mother, Dolly Gogoi, is well-known Social Worker.
Gaurav Gogoi completed his schooling at St. Columba’s School, Delhi. He earned a B. Tech degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering in 2004 from Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering, affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi. Later, he completed a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University (USA).
After completing his education, Gaurav worked as a social worker. Before entering active politics, he also worked for short period in the private corporate sector, where he was part of the marketing team at Airtel.
Gaurav Gogoi is married to Elizabeth Clare (now Elizabeth Gogoi), who was born in the United Kingdom. The couple got married on 22 October 2013. Elizabeth Gogoi is a professional working in the field of climate change, international development, and public policy. They have two children, a son and a daughter.
Gaurav Gogoi is the younger son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Dolly Gogoi. He has an elder sister, Chandrima Gogoi, who is an MBA graduate.
