After having disagreements with the then chief minister late Tarun Gogoi, who was once his close colleague, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned from the party membership from Indian National Congress (INC) on 21 July, 2014. later, he expressed his wish to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and work under the leadership of Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah.
Dr. Sarma officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 23 August 2015. He joined the party at Amit Shah’s residence in New Delhi through state BJP president Sri Siddhartha Bhattacharya. Later, in 2021, he became the Chief Minister of Assam.
Himanta Biswa Sarma’s major achievements as chief minister and in his council ministerial roles – focuses on big reforms in healthcare, education, infrastructure, and good governance. Some of the key achievements are –
A. Orunodoi Scheme
Launched on October 2020, Orunodoi is a major Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme that gives Rs. 1250 every month to economically weaker families. The Scheme supports over 27 lakh women, with money sent directly to their bank accounts.
B. Mission Basundhara
Mission Basundhara is a large land rights and land records reform program. It has made land services easier by reducing delays, improving transparency, and helping settle long-pending land disputes. The mission has already processed over 8.5 lakh applications.
C. Providing 1 Lakh Government Jobs
Dr. Sarma fulfilled his election promise by providing more that 1 lakh government jobs in Assam. He highlighted that the recruitment process was fully transparent and based on merit, with zero corruption reported.

A major Semiconductor project by the TATA Group is coming up in Jagiraod. It will focus on more than 61 types of raw materials and involve over 150 potential suppliers. The initiative is expected to create over 1.2 lakh job, support innovation and strengthen Assam’s position in the fast-growing semiconductor industry.
Dr. Sarma and his cabinet approved “Assam Mala 3.0” with a budget of Rs. 3, 217 crores. This project will develop a high-speed transport network, covering 88.3 km of roads and 36 bridges across 34 districts of Assam.
