Himanta Biswa Sarma joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in the early 1991. He was first elected as the MLA from Jalukbari constituency in 2001, winning by about 78,000 votes. He was elected again in 2006, and once more in 2011 for his third term.
Later, in 21 July 2014, he resigned from the Indian national Congress (INC) party due to political disagreements with then chief minister Tarun Gogoi.
Himanta Biswa Sarma held several key roles in the Assam Government. From 2002 to 2014 he served as minister of state and handled important departments such as Agriculture, Planning and Development, Finance, Health, Education and Assam Accord Implementation.
During His tenure, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma took several important initiatives. New medical colleges were built in Jorhat, Barpeta and Tezpur. He also started work on five more medical colleges in Diphu, Nagaon, Dhubri, North Lakhimpur and Kakrajhar. Most of these are currently functioning, while a few are in their final stages.
Dr. Sarma also brought major changes to the education sector. More that 1.5 lakh teachers were appointed through fair and transparent process during his tenure.
