Political Journey

Janata Dal (United) was formed in 2003 after the merger of three parties – Janata Dal, The Samata Party, and the Lok Shakti Party.

Nitish Kumar became the chief minister of Bihar in 2005 after the JD(U)-BJP alliance won the state elections.

In 2010, the JD(U) and BJP alliance again won the Bihar Assembly elections, and Nitish Kumar took oath as the chief minister for the third term. In 2013, Nitish ended his party’s long relationship with the BJP. He resigned in 2014 after JD(U) performed poorly in the Lok Sabha elections. However, he returned as chief minister in 2015 with the support of the Mahagathbandhan (JD(U)-RJD-Congress).

In 2017, another major change happened when Nitish Kumar left the Mahagathbandhan and again joined the BJP-led NDA. He continued as chief minister under the new alliance. He again took oath as chief minister after 2020 Bihar elections, leading the NDA government.

By 2025, Nitish Kumar reached a big milestone, he became chief minister for the tenth term on 20 November 2025. His party JD(U) formed the government along with the NDA, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
