Political Journey
The “Samata Party (SAP)” was formed in 1994 by George Fernandes and Nitish Kumar, it was created after breaking away from the “Janata Dal”, which itself was formed in 1988 from a merger of ‘Lok Dal, Jagjivan Ram’s Congress, and Jan Morcha’.
After leaving Janata Dal and forming the “Samata Party”, Nitish Kumar, as a co-founder, became an active member of the new party. With the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) he also served ass the Union Minister of Railways in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.
Inn 2000, as a member of the “Samata Party” Nitish Kumar was elected Chief Minister of Bihar for the first time with the support of the Vajpayee-led BJP government at the centre.
In 2003, the “Samata party” split and most of its members, including Nitish Kumar, merged with the Janata Dal (United) – JD(U).
