Inn 2000, as a member of the β€œSamata Party” Nitish Kumar was elected chief minister of Bihar for the first time with the support of the Vajpayee-led BJP government at the centre.

In 2003, the β€œSamata party” split and most of its members, including Nitish Kumar, merged with the Janata Dal (United) – JD(U).
