Who is Zubeen Garg?

Zubeen Garg was an Indian Singer, Composer, Actor, Film Director, and Producer. He primarily worked in Assamese, Bengali and Hindi languages. During his long career, he sang more than 40,000 songs in over 40 regional languages of India.

Zubeen Garg started his singing career in 1992 with the Assamese album Anamika. Popular Assamese song such as Mayabini Ratir Bukut, Maya Mathu Maya, Anamika, Gane Ki Aane are among the most iconic hit songs, written and composed by Zubeen Garg. His last song was Mur Mon, which he performed while also acting in the Assamese film Roi Roi Binale.

Apart from music, Zubeen Garg also made a strong mark in films. He acted in popular Assamese movies such as Tumi Mur Mathu Mur (2000), Mon Jai (2008), Mission China (2017) and Kanchanjangha (2019), which became one of the highest-grossing Assamese films of its time. His last acting role was in the Assamese film Roi Roi Binale (2025), where he also performed the song Mur Mon.

Early Life of Zubeen Garg

Zubeen Garg was born as Zubeen Borthakur on 18 November 1972 in Tura, Meghalaya. He was born into a family with a strong musical background. His father, Mohini Mohan Borthakur, is a former Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer, magistrate, Poet and lyricist while his mother Ily Borthakur, was a Singer.

He completed his primary education at Carmel School, Assam, and later studied at Karimganj High School and Bijni Bandhab High School. Zubeen Garg passed his matriculation from Tamulpur Higher Secondary School in 1989. He then completed his higher secondary education Jagannath Barooah College (now Jagannath Barooah University). In 1991, he joined B. Borooah College to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree but later dropped out to focus fully on his singing career.

Zubeen Garg married Garima Saikia Garg in 2002. She is a talented costume designer, Film Producer, and creative professional who has contributed to Assamese and other regional cinema. Garima Saikia Garg has produced popular films such as Mission China, Kanchanjangha, Sikaar and Roi Roi Binale.

Zubeen Garg’s Family

Zubeen Garg is the eldest son of Mohini Mohan Borthakur and Ily Borthakur. He has two younger sisters. His sister Jonkie Borthakur was a Singerand actress who died in a car accident in 2002. His other sister, Palme Borthakur, holds a PhD and has worked as a Professor of Geography at the University of Science and technology, Meghalaya and Royal Global University.

Zubeen Garg’s Death

The beloved Indian singer Zubeen Garg died by drowning on 19 September 2025 in Singapore. He reportedly drowned while swimming in the sea without a life jacket near Saint John’s Island. His died occurred under mysterious circumstances.

Investigations into Zubeen Garg’s death are ongoing. The case is being investigated by the Singapore Police Force (SPF).

Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of AssamGovernment submitted a charge sheet in the Hon’ble Chief Judicial magistrate’s (CJM) Court on 12 December 2025. The legal process is currently underway.
