Hemant Soren started his political career in 2009 as a Member of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament. After the death of his brother, he entered state politics and contested the Assembly by-election from the Dumka seat, where his brother was the MLA. He won the election and resigned from the Rajya Sabha.
At that time, the BJP formed the Jharkhand government with the support of JMM. Arjun Munda became the Chief Minister, and Hemant Soren was made the deputy Chief minister of the state.
In 2013, with the support of the INC and RJD, Hemant Soren became the youngest Chief Minister of Jharkhand. However, his first term was short, and in 2014 the BJP returned to power. After this, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly.
In 2016, a major political moment came when the BJP government planned changes to the tenancy laws. Many tribal people opposed this move and held protests. Hemant Soren strongly supported these protests and became a leading voice for tribal rights in the state. This helped strengthen his image as a tribal leader.
In 2019, Hemant Soren led an alliance of JMM, Congress, and RJD and returned to power as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
In January 2024, he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a land and money-laundering case. During this time, Champai Soren was made Chief Minister, and his wife Kalpana Soren led the campaign for the party. After getting bail, Hemant Soren returned as Chief Minister again.
