Pema Khandu, son of former Arunachal Pradesh CM late Dorjee Khandu, is an Indian politician and the 9th Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, serving since 2016. He belongs to the Monpa tribe and was ranked as the second richest Chief Minister of Indian in 2024 by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR).
Since taking office, he and his government have changed party affiliations from the Indian national Congress (INC) to People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) in September 2016, and later to the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) in December 2016.
Pema Khandu was born on 21 August 1979 in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. His father the late Dorjee Khandu, was a former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. He passed away in a helicopter accident while visiting his constituency. His mother, Leki Zangmu, was a homemaker and had also worked as a labourer with GREF and BRO in her early years. She passed away in 2024 after a long illness.
Khandu studied in a government secondary school in Tawang for his early education. After finishing school, he completed his higher secondary studies at Donyi-Polo Vidya Bhawan in Tawang. Later, he moved to Delhi to study at Hindu College under Delhi University and completed his B.A. degree in 2000.
Pema Khandu married to Tsering Dolma, who is a social service activist and they have five children – two son and three daughters.
According to the 2024 report by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sri Pema Khandu is the second richest chief minister in India. In 2024, he declared total assets worth Rs. 332.56 crores, making him one of the wealthiest leaders among all Indian Chief Ministers.
The Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu once became the youngest chief minister in India when he assumed office in July 2016 at the age of 36. He continues to hold the record as the youngest serving chief minister in the country, now aged 46.
