Hemant Soren is an Indian politician and the 11th Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He is the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party and also leads the state assembly.
He started his political career as a Member of the Rajya Sabha in 2009. After his brother passed away, he contested the Jharkhand Assembly election from the Dumka seat, which his brother earlier represented. He won the election and left the Rajya Sabha in January 2010.
Hemant Soren served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand twice – first from 2013 to 2014 and again from 2019 to 2024. He was also the deputy Chief minister from 2010 to 2013.
On 31 January 2024, he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a land scam case. He got bail and was released from jail on 28 June 2024. He became Chief Minister again in July 2024.
Hemant Soren was born on 10 August 1975 in Ramgarh district of Bihar, which is now part of Jharkhand. His father, Shibu Soren, is a well-known tribal leader, a former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, and the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party. His, mother, Roopi Soren, is a housewife. Hemant Soren is the third child in his family.
He completed his early schooling at Patna High School. He passed his 12th Class in Science from Patna University in 1994. Later, he joined the Mechanical Engineering course at Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, Ranchi. However, he left his studies before finishing the course to enter politics.
Hemant Soren married Kalpana Murmu Soren in 2006. She is also a politician and an MLA from the Gandey seat in Jharkhand from the JMM party. They have two children named Nikhil Soren and Ansh Soren.
Hemant Soren has held almost every major post in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, including Deputy Chief Minister, leader of the Opposition, leader of the House, and now Chief Minister, showing his long and varied political journey.
Hemant Soren has represented two different constituencies – Dumka and Barhait during his political career. He served Dumka twice before shifting to Barhait in 2014, which he still represents.
Hemant Soren is the third child of his parents, Shibu Soren and Roopi Soren. He has two brothers and one sister. His youngest brother, Basant Soren, is also an MLA from the Dumka seat in Jharkhand.
During the land scam investigation in January 2024, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) declared Hemant Soren “untraceable” for about 30 hours after he left his Delhi residence just before a raid. He later appeared at his official home in Ranchi the next day. This brief period of disappearance became a widely discussed and unusual moment in his political career.
