In January 2024, Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with a land-related investigation in Ranchi. The case involved allegations linked to the purchase of land measuring over 8 acres. Hemant Soren denied all charges and stated that the case was politically motivated.
During his time in custody, Champai Soren was appointed as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand to lead the government.
Resolve Status:
Hemant Soren was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court in June 2024. After his release, he returned as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand in July 2024.
