Pratibha Patil, whose full name is Pratibha Devisingh Patil, also known as Pratibha Patil Shekhawat, is an Indian politician and lawyer. She was the first woman President of India and served in this role from 2007 to 2012.
She started her political career at the age of 27. In 1962, she was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the Jalgaon constituency. She is a member of the Indian National Congress (INC)
During her long political career, Pratibha Patil served in many important positions. She was a Member of the Legislative Assembly, a Member of Parliament in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and also the Governor of Rajasthan from 2004 to 2007.
She also held several ministerial posts in the Maharashtra government, including Social Welfare, Education, Urban Development, and Health. At the national level, she served as Deputy Chairperson and Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, and Chairperson and House Committee of the Lok Sabha.
Pratibha Patil, whose birth name was Pratibha Narayanrao Patil, was born on 19 December 1934 in Nadgaon, in the Bombay Presidency of British India (now in Maharashtra, India). Her father, Narayanrao Patil, was a government prosecutor and lawyer. Her mother, Gangabai, passed away when Pratibha was 12 years old.
She completed her school education at R. R. Vidyalaya, Jalgaon. She later earned two degrees in Political Science and Economics from Mooljee Jetha College, Jalgaon. After that, she studied law and received her LL.B. degree from Government Law College, Bombay (now Maharashtra). She then worked as a lawyer at the Jalgaon District Court.
In 1965, Pratibha Patil married Dr. Devisingh R. Shekhawat, who is an educationist and social-political leader. He was an MLA from Amravati between 1985 and 1990 and later became the first Mayor of Amravati in 1992.
Pratibha Patil and Dr. Shekhawat have two children. Their daughter, Jyoti Rathore, is an engineer, and their son, Rajendra (Raosaheb) Shekhawat, later became an MLA, following his parent’s path in politics.
