On 21 December 2016, during a big political drama, Pema Khandu was suspended by the People’s party of Arunachal (PPA) president, and Takan Pario was said to be next possible chief minister.
However, Khandu proved his majority on the floor of the Assembly when 33 out of 43 PPA MLAs joined the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP). With these MLAs, along with tow independents and BJP’s own 11 MLAs, The BJP’s strength became 45. Khandu returned as chief minister just 45 days later.
In 2019 Arunachal Pradesh elections, Khandu led the BJP to win 41 out of 60 seats and formed the government again. In the 2024 elections, the BJP improved its performance and won 46 out of 60 seats, and Pema Khandu was re elected as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh.
