Political Journey

After his father passed away, Pema Khandu joined the State government as a Cabinet Minister for Water Resource Development and Tourism. He later won the by-election for his father’s seat, Mukta, without any opponent in 2011 as a candidate of the Indian National Congress (INC).

Before this, Khandu had become the secretary of the Arunachal Congress Committee in 2005 and the President of the Tawang district congress committee in 2010. On 16 July 2016, he was elected as the Congress Legislative Party leader and took oath as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh on 17 July 2016.

On 16 September 2016, Khandu left the Indian National Congress and joined the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) along with 43 MLAs.

Pema Khandu, son of former Arunachal Pradesh CM late Dorjee Khandu, is an Indian politician and the 9th Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, serving since 2016. He belongs to the Monpa tribe and was ranked as the second richest Chief Minister of Indian in 2024 by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR).Since taking office, he and his government have changed party affiliations from the Indian national Congress (INC) to People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) in September 2016, and later to the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) in December 2016.
