Vishnu Deo Sai is an Indian politician and the 4th Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. He is the second tribal leader to serve as a Chief Minister, after Hemananda Biswal of Odisha and was listed as the 9th richest Chief Minister in Indian in 2024 by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR).
Sai belongs to the Kunwar tribe and studied up to Higher Secondary. His political journey began in 1989 when he was elected as a Panch in the Bagiya Gram Panchayat. Over the years, he grew in his career, serving as an MLA, MP and later becoming the Chief Minister.
Vishnu Deo Sai was born on 21 February 1964 in Bagiya village located in Farsabahar of Jashpur district, Chhattisgarh. His father, Ramprasad Sai, was a farmer and passed away when Vishnu was only ten years old. His mother, Jasmani Devi Sai is a homemaker.
Sai completed his higher secondary schooling at Loyola Higher Secondary School in Kunkuri, Jashpur district. Due to family responsibilities, he could not continue his studies and started working in agriculture to support his family.
In 1991, Vishnu Deo Sai married Kaushalya Sai. She is involved in social service and works actively for the development of the Kanwar Community in Northern Chhattisgarh. The couple has three children – a son, Toshendra Dev Sai, and two daughters, Smriti Sai and Nivriti Sai Kunwar.
Beyond his state-level contribution, Vishnu Deo Sai has significant experience in the Central Government. He served as a Union Minister of State for Steel under the Narendra Modi government from 2014 to 2019.
Vishnu Deo Sai’s election as Chief Minister in 2023 was history. He became the first tribal leader from the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) to hold the state’s top office.
Vishnu Deo Sai completed his Higher Secondary Education at “Loyola Higher Secondary School” in Kunkuri. He later attended college in Ambikapur for his graduation, but he left his studies midway and returned to his village in 1988.
